At Bute House, we are proud to offer both French and Spanish. Lessons are taught by specialist teachers, with a dedicated language assistant for each language to enhance the students’ learning experience.
Years 1 and 2 have one Modern Foreign Language (MFL) lesson per week and develop an ear and taste for the language through songs, props and stories. In Key Stage 2, pupils enjoy the benefits of an intensive approach, with three lessons of Spanish per week in Years 3 and 4, and three of French in Years 5 and 6. Bilingual pupils also receive additional challenges through one-to-one support from our language assistants on a regular basis.
Language assemblies and MFL days allow pupils to display their abilities in front of the whole school, and focus on the cultural aspects of languages. In addition, various trips and events take place throughout the year to shine a light on our multilingual school community, enrich the curriculum and foster a lifelong love of languages. Our pupils also benefit from the opportunity to use their skills in pen-pal schemes organised with partner schools in Europe.
